The official poster for the upcoming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was just released, and it’s been met with quite a lot of criticism.
What’s wrong
It’s pretty easy to see the main points for concern, the entire image lacks any and all kind of depth, and all characters visible appear to have been hurriedly Photoshopped in.
The rebel forces on the beach haven’t left any kinds of tracks in the sand, and none of them have any kind of weapon drawn, but they’re still rushing headlong into the water, to confront a group of storm troopers.
Which brings us to the storm troopers themselves, as most are wading in knee deep water, but one of them is just pretty much casually walking on water.
What’s wrong-er
No matter how one looks at it, this scene makes no military sense. The rebels are shown running out into the knee deep water and incoming blaster fire to meet the Stormtroopers head on, in presumably hand to hand combat in the water.
This appears to be a Donald Trump 4D underwater chess kind of strategy: a reverse amphibious assault!
Why it’s unsatisfying
The location is a tiny blue, extremely calm lagoon, set against a rather cheesy, postcard looking beach. Further, for any kind and any scale of battle, the beach is far too clean, and the poster features a handful of tiny people, badly Photoshopped onto this rather uninspiring location.
However, even leaving all this aside, as one commenter on reddit accurately observed:
